While everyone has heard of Chiropractors not everyone is familiar with what, exactly, it is that they do and how they help people. So what is a Chiropractor? Why do people seek out chiropractic treatment? How do Chiropractors treat their patients? This article will answer all of these questions.
Chiropractors are medical professionals that specialize in diagnosing and treating injuries and disorders that are related to the spine and the joint. The Chiropractors use a "hands on" approach to help their patients overcome their injuries and relieve their pain and their care is focused on the adjusting and manipulation of the skeletal system and the muscles that immediately surround them.
Chiropractors use the standard method to diagnose a patient's illness or injury. A patient's first visit to the Chiropractor will result in the patient giving his full medical history and then being given a routine (and thorough) exam that involves a standard physical, x-rays and both neurological and orthopaedic exams.
Future visits to the Chiropractor will involve the patient having his spine aligned, which the Chiropractor will do through the manipulation of the spinal vertebrae. This can be done both through massage and "cracking." "Cracking" involves the Chiropractor using a fast and strong motion to force a joint out of its comfort zone and then back into place. The jolt from this releases the gases that build up around a joint which puts pressure on the joint and the rest of the skeletal system. This is not painful and can relieve a lot of the stress on a patient's spine and joints.
Chiropractors also work with patients to improve their motion range by moving the patient's body into different poses and forcing the muscles to stretch in ways that feel foreign but will help speed up the patient's recovery. Electrical stimulation and massage are also regular forms of treatment used when someone visits the Chiropractor.
Finally, a Chiropractor will help a patient determine if any outside factors are affecting his health"like diet and exercise. Together the patient and Chiropractor will figure out a healthy lifestyle that will help the patient recover more quickly.
